Weekend Traditions

Casual weekends at home are some of my favorite moments; and as a lover of family traditions, I’m always looking to build new ones with Chris (and our future family one day). We both love coffee in bed and leisurely mornings. Given that we don’t have kids yet this is quite easy to do. As one of my favorite authors, Lynette Lewis, would says: while you wait on one dream, pursue another. For me, I’m enjoying this season of life by creating weekend traditions with Chris, which includes cooking–something I’m not good at, but slowly learning as a new wife.

If you’re like me, and cooking doesn’t come naturally to you, you can start building your kitchen traditions with the best and easiest meal of the day–breakfast. Waffles might be one of the simplest, yet yummiest ways for a novice to get started. Williams-Sonoma is a handy helper too; their Bellegem waffle mix might be one of my favorites and all it requires you to add is water and butter. Voila! For a nutritious element you can add fruit toppings. Plus the colors make it look pretty.

While cooking may not be my thing (at least not yet), baking is something that I enjoy much more. Maybe it’s because I’ve always been a rule follower; adhering to a meticulous step-by-step, ingredient list makes sense to me–I know what’s required. But cooking is so different. It’s much more of an exploratory zone of spices, and flavors that can sometimes overwhelm me. Chris likes to call me a messy and unpredictable cook– you never know what you’re going to get.

I take full advantage of any chance I have to use our wedding gifts. What good is a nice glass if you never use it? My motto is to enjoy your pretty china and serving platters on a daily basis, because that’s what they are there for–to relish and share with others. Part of creating the lifestyle of your dreams can include turning those “occasional” fine china moments into your everyday life. For me, using my vintage-inspired bowls and glasses while sitting down at the table (rather than standing at the counter) is part of how I’m building a joy-filled lifestyle, with weekend traditions.

What kind of dreams are you pursuing? Do you have others that are on hold? I would love to hear from you and how you’re building life-giving traditions in your everyday.
