Today is the fist day of February and romance is in full bloom. Valentine’s day is a short fourteen days away offering the perfect excuse for gift-giving, flower splurging and indulging in sweet morsels of chocolate. I love this time of year! Not only for the romance, but for the celebration of love and friendship. I’m a sucker for tradition so this got me thinking, “what is the history behind St. Valentine and all this lovey dovey madness after all?” I did a little research and found that it dates back to both Roman and Christian tradition. There are a few accounts that claim Priest Valentine married young men and women, after Emperor Claudius II banned men from marrying in belief that single men made better soldiers. Once Valentine’s acts were discovered, he was put to death. A second account claims, Valentine was killed after attempting to help Christians escape harsh Romans prisons. Valentine was named a Saint and deemed heroic and romantic. I guess it’s still not quite clear to me how this translates to our twenty-first century traditions, but in any case…Happy Valentine’s Day! xo
